Why does my chest hurt when breathing?

General causes of chest pain when inhaling, warning signs and when to see a doctor.

Chest pain when breathing is one of the most frequently consulted symptoms. In most cases it has a muscular or respiratory origin, but it always deserves attention.

Frequent causes

Costochondritis: Inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum. Causes pain that worsens when pressing the chest or breathing deeply. It is benign and usually resolves on its own.

Intercostal muscle tension: The muscles between the ribs can tense up from physical exertion, intense coughing or poor posture. The pain is localized and increases with movement.

Pleuritis: Inflammation of the membrane surrounding the lungs. Causes sharp pain that worsens with deep inspiration. May be accompanied by fever.

Gastroesophageal reflux: Stomach acid can irritate the esophagus and produce a burning or pressure sensation in the chest.

Warning signs — seek urgent care if you also have

  • Pain radiating to the left arm, jaw or back
  • Difficulty breathing at rest
  • Cold sweats or dizziness with the pain
  • Pain lasting more than 20 minutes without improvement
  • Blue lips or nails

  • When to act?

If the pain appears when breathing deeply and disappears at rest, without other symptoms, it is generally not urgent. Observe for 24-48 hours. If pain is intense, appears at rest or is accompanied by the above signs, **call emergency services**.
